MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A second person has been charged in connection to a fatal shooting in Lino Lakes on Aug. 27.

Melissa Zielinski, 47, has been charged with second degree murder in the death of 22-year-old Karl Mitchel Henderson.

According to the criminal complaint, Lino Lakes police officers responded to a report of a shooting at 6987 West Shadow Lake Drive. When they arrived, the spoke to a man who said he had recently come home from grocery shopping and noticed an unfamiliar black SUV in the driveway.

The man then entered his house, where he found a man and a woman who he did not know. He said he followed them outside and asked what they were doing. In response, the man said effectively “your son stole on me” and “I’ll take you out, too.” He then drove away with the woman.

The owner of the house then went back inside where he found his son, Karl Mitchell Henderson, face down and injured. The first responders reported Henderson had been shot in the abdomen and died.

Several neighbors with Ring surveillance doorbells captured images of the black SUV, which was identified as potentially a GMC Terrain.

While investigating the Henderson’s bedroom, authorities found a Hi-Point 9mm handgun on the floor, which was not known to belong to anyone at the home. DNA test on the gun matched the profile of 43-year-old Nicholas Walter Zielinski. Officers then learned that a woman lived with him and owned a black GMC Terrain.

The father was then shown a photo lineup including Nicholas Zielinski, and identified him as the man who had been in his home.

The officers then spoke to a number of people to identify the woman and owner of the car, and many people said it was Melissa Zielinski, Nicholas Zielinski’s sister, who lives in Sandstone, Minnesota.

The complaint states that officers also obtained cell phone tracking data on the two Zielinski’s phones. On the morning of the shooting, Nicholas Zielinski appeared to leave his home in Duluth, travel to Sandstone and to the area of the shooting. Afterwards, he left, stopped in Sandstone, and continued back to Duluth.

Melissa Zielinski’s phone showed her in the metro area the day of the shooting. She joined Nicholas Zielinski’s phone near the area of the shooting, then went back to Sandstone. There were also several messages on her phone from the day before, which said that she and her brother were going to collect money, and that she had “waited long enough.”

It was later revealed that Melissa Zielinski’s friend had been planning on purchasing a home in Sandstone, but was informed hours before the closing that approximately $4,000 was due in “cash needed to close.” The friend said he supplied the money, but on the morning of the Aug. 28 closing, Melissa Zielinski unexpectedly provided him with $3,000 in cash to offset the amount due.

If convicted, Melissa Zielinski could face up to 40 years in prison.

Nicholas Zielinski was also charged with second degree murder on Sept. 1.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 38-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly poisoning his ex-wife.

Thorbjorn Vadnis Koyen MacBain has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and assault with a dangerous weapon. MacBain changed his name from Trevor Alexander Bain during his divorce.

According to the criminal complaint, MacBain’s ex-wife agreed to meet him at Central Park in Roseville on Sept. 23 so he could have visitation time with their children. During their divorce, she had been awarded custody of the two kids.

She later told police she stayed at the park because she was afraid he would not return the children if she left. While at the park, MacBain was playing with squirt guns with his children.

At one point, MacBain went to the bathroom, and when he came out, he said he squirted his ex-wife with the squirt gun. However, his ex-wife disagreed, and said MacBain, who was holding a bottle, poured a liquid on her. She licked the liquid from her hand to try to find out what it was, and said it had a spicy flavor, inconsistent with water.

Immediately afterwards, she had a reaction and said she thought she was going to lose consciousness. She described feeling sick and being unable to stand up.

According to the complaint, she then called 911, but was unable to speak. MacBain said she was having a panic attack and that her reaction was because of her hyperthyroidism. The complaint notes that MacBain had an extensive knowledge of his ex-wife’s medical history, despite being divorced for seven years.

She was transported to Regions Hospital, where Dr. Robert Pueringer said all of her symptoms were consistent with having been poisoned with organophosphate, which include pesticides and nerve agents Sarin, Tabun, and Soman.

According to his ex-wife, MacBain had spoken about poison in the past. He said he believed his father and others had tried to poison him.

MacBain’s 10-year-old child was on the bench when his mother was splashed with the liquid. He said it was sticky and had a “weird” smell. He also said that MacBain did not act concerned before or after the 911 call. One of the other children was splashed, but they had less severe reactions than their mother.

Police later arrested MacBain. When his girlfriend was told she could not return to the house, she spontaneously asked why and said “there are no chemicals or bombs in there.”

Investigators conducted a court-authorized search of the home on the 600 block of Asbury Street in St. Paul on Friday to recover potentially hazardous evidence.

The FBI’s Hazardous Evidence Response Team (HERT) was on the scene along with other FBI personnel, with assistance from the Minnesota National Guard 55th Civil Support Team and the St. Paul Fire and police departments.

If convicted, MacBain could face up to 50 years in prison.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) — Timberwolves guard Malik Beasley is charged with using a rifle to threaten a family who was house hunting in his neighborhood in the Twin Cities.

Beasley was charged Thursday in Hennepin County District Court with threats of violence and drug possession, both felonies. His wife, Montana Yao, also faces a felony drug charge.

According to a criminal complaint, a couple on a Parade of Home tour with their 13-year-old child pulled up to the home Beasley and Yao ren in Plymouth last month, but saw it was roped off. So, they pulled up on the shoulder of the road to look up other houses to visit.

That’s when Beasley tapped on the window of the family’s SUV, pointed a rifle at them and yelled at them to”Get the f— off” his property, prosecutors said.

Beasley continued to train the rifle at the SUV as it drove off, the criminal complaint said.

Police said they searched Beasley and Yao’s home and found a 12-gauge shotgun, a handgun and an automatic rifle that matched the description given by the couple in the SUV. The rifle was described by officers as a SG Works automatic long gun assault rifle.

Officers said they also found leafy marijuana in the home, about 835 grams without packaging. Possessing marijuana in its original leafy form in Minnesota is illegal.

According to the criminal complaint, Beasley’s home was equipped with several surveillance cameras, and footage shows him grabbing the rifle and leaving the house out of the garage door prior to the incident. Officers said the footage also captures him laughing afterwards and “making shots fired sounds with his friends.”

Defense attorneys Steve Haney and Ryan Pacyga issued a statement saying that “we are cooperating with the law enforcement investigation and will carefully review the discovery in the coming days.”

The Timberwolves also issued a statement following the announcement of charges.

“We are aware of the charges involving Malik Beasley. We take these allegations seriously and will let the legal process run its course,” the team said.

The charges come one day after Wolves executive vice president Sachin Gupta addressed the team’s salary-cap situation and said there should be room to sign Beasley. He is a restricted free agent and averaged 20.7 points in 14 games with the Wolves this past season.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 29-year-old man from St. Paul has been charged in connection to the fatal shooting of Maurice Antonio Anderson outside and Eagan hotel on Monday.

Robert Lee Baker was charged in Dakota County for one count of murder in the second degree and one count of possession of a firearm by an ineligible person.

According to the criminal complaint, Eagan police officers responded to a report of shots fired at a hotel at 9 p.m. One of the callers said there was a man lying on the ground outside the hotel, and another caller said they saw a red car quickly leaving the area.

Anderson, the man on the ground, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly after arriving at the hotel, officers found the red car, and Baker was in the passenger seat. He and the driver were arrested.

RELATED: Man Fatally Shot Outside Eagan Hotel Identified As Maurice Anderson

The driver said she and Baker had gone to the Eagan hotel to meet up with a friend of hers. After the friend got into the backseat of the car, two men with handguns got into the backseat and told them to drive. She said she drove to a nearby hotel parking lot and the two men robbed her and Baker.

The officers then spoke to Baker, who initially confirmed the friend got in the car and the two men with guns robbed them. Eventually he said that both men who had robbed him pointed guns at him, and he fired his gun, hitting one of the men. He didn’t remember how many times he fired, but said he was about 30 feet away when Anderson started shooting, and he was as close as two feet from the victim when he was shooting him. Baker said he put the .40 caliber handgun he used in a backpack inside the car.

The officers found 16 discharged cartridge casings consistent with the .40 handgun scattered around the scene, but no other type of casings.

Officers obtained a warrant for the car, and found a .40 caliber handgun and a BB gun. When asked about the BB gun, Baker said that after he shot Anderson, he collected the driver’s phone, and the gun Anderson had used for the robbery.

According to documents, Baker is not allowed to possess a firearm because of his criminal history. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Anderson died of a total of 11 gunshot wounds, including one in his head, three in his back, and one in his buttocks.

Baker made his first court appearance Thursday morning and his bail was set to $1.5 million, without conditions. His next court appearance is set for Nov. 25 in Hastings.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Minneapolis man has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide after a rollover crash in Brooklyn Center killed a 15-year-old boy.

Demetreious Anderson Baldwin, 30, was charged in Hennepin County with one count of criminal vehicular homicide in which the driver who caused the collision left the scene.

According to the criminal complaint, officers arrived at 5920 Brooklyn Boulevard at 1:23 a.m. on Sunday. They saw a heavily damaged car balancing on the driver’s side in the parking lot. The passenger side of the car was crushed, and a boy was hanging upside down and out of the area where the rear window should have been. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner said the boy is from Robbinsdale.

Officers found markings in the road which indicated the vehicle – which Baldwin owns –  had left the road several times, become airborne, and crashed into the parking lot, where it came to rest on its side.

They also learned that Baldwin was in the car with the boy, who was a relative, and another relative.

Officers found the relative at his residence. He was intoxicated and had injuries consistent with being in a motor vehicle accident. The relative confirmed he was a passenger in Baldwin’s car. He also said he and Baldwin had consumed alcohol, and that Baldwin lost control of the vehicle and crashed. He was unsure of what happened after the accident.

Later, officers found Baldwin at a hospital, and he admitted he was driving the car with his relatives. The complaint says he admitted to crashing due to alcohol consumption. He could not account for how or why he and his relative left the scene.

If Baldwin is convicted of the criminal vehicular homicide charges, he could spend a maximum of 10 years in prison.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – An Austin man has been charged after an alleged brutal assault left his wife in the hospital and his 15-year-old stepson dead.

Jaime Arquimides Vaca, 27, has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree assault in Mower County.

According to the criminal complaint, an Austin Police officer responded to 808 3rd Avenue northwest at 8:50 a.m. on Dec. 15 on a report that people were being stabbed by a man. When the officer arrived, they found a woman lying in the front yard, bleeding from a stab wound in her neck. She said she had been stabbed by her husband, and that her son, who was also stabbed, was inside.

Officers found the son on the couch, struggling to breathe. He was taken to Mayo Clinic and then flown by helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, but he died from his injuries.

In searching the house, officers found Vaca in the bathroom, holding a knife. When he was told to drop it, but did not comply, officers deployed a Taser. He was then treated for minor injuries before he was taken to the Mower County Jail.

Afterwards, officers cleared the house and found five children hiding upstairs. After a warrant was obtained, BCA agents found two knives in the bathroom.

In post-Miranda interviews with Vaca, he said he and his wife were arguing about his new job, which he had quit the night before. They were texting from separate rooms after he got home at night, but but between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Dec. 15, he went into her bedroom they continued to argue. She said she was going to leave him. He then “choked” her and then he “blacked out,” the complaint says.

He said he started stabbing his wife, and his stepson came into the room and tried to stop him. He swung at the boy and stabbed him.

In a later interview, Vaca allegedly said “I’m a murderer.”

If convicted of all four counts, Vaca could be sentenced to 120 years in prison.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A St. Paul man has been charged after allegedly carjacking five people in the span of an hour and 10 minutes in Minneapolis.

His arrest and charges were part of the “carjacking crackdown,” in which the Minneapolis Police Department and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office announced they had arrested approximately 50 people for the crime.

Carjacking Crackdown: Minneapolis Police Chief, Henn. Co. Sheriff Announce 50 Arrests

Brandon Lee Rock, 20, was charged in Hennepin County with five counts of first-degree aggravated robbery and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon.

According to the criminal complaint, Rock was with a young boy on the morning of Nov. 27. At 7 a.m., the two of them approached a man on the 1300 block of 7th Street southeast in Minneapolis. Rock was holding a handgun and pointed it at the man, who was getting into his car. He demanded that the man give them his wallet, cell phone, and car keys.

At 7:15 a.m., the two approached another man at 21st Avenue south and East Lake Street. Rock pointed his handgun at the man and took his wallet and jacket before fleeing the scene.

At 7:50 a.m., the two pulled up to a woman sitting in her car around the 300 block of Elmwood Place. They blocked the woman from exiting her car and Rock pointed the gun at her, demanding she get out of the car and give them her purse. She refused and drove away as Rock fired multiple rounds into her car.

The criminal complaint goes on to say that at 8 a.m., a man was on his phone, sitting in his car around the intersection of 38th Street west and Dupont Avenue south. Rock tapped on his window with the gun and demanded that he get out of his car and hand over his car keys, cell phone, and any other personal items he had. Though Rock and the boy got into the man’s car, they eventually left in the first victim’s car. The fourth victim identified Rock in a photo lineup.

At 8:10 a.m., the two pulled up next to a man walking around the 2900 block of Pleasant Avenue. They demanded he hand over his personal items, and though the man tried to run away, Rock and the boy took an envelope with approximately $1,300 from the man’s back pocket.

Ten minutes later, officers saw the first victim’s car and tried to stop it, but it sped away. They later found the car unoccupied around the 2300 block of Pillsbury Avenue South. Inside, they found the second victim’s wallet and jacket.

Officers executed a search warrant at around 2400 Ogema Place. While searching the residence, officers found multiple personal items believed to belong to the victims and a loaded 9mm handgun. Rock was at the address and was arrested.

If convicted, Rock could serve up to 107 years in prison.

Charges: Canadian Citizens Found With 67 Firearms In Car Near Fergus Falls

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Two Canadian citizens have been federally charged after they were found to be carrying 67 firearms in their car in Fergus Falls.

Dayne Adrian Sitladeen, 29, and Muzamil Aden Addow, 29, have both been charged with one count of being an unlawful alien in possession of firearms.

According to the criminal complaint, on Jan. 10 around 10:10 p.m., a State Patrol trooper saw a pickup truck going between 95 and 99 mph on I-94 near Fergus Falls.

When the trooper approached the truck – a Chevrolet Silverado with a Texas license plate – the driver, later found to be Addow,  handed him a driver’s license from Ontario, Canada with a false name. The passenger handed over a fake Florida ID card, but was eventually identified as Sitladeen.

Both the driver and passenger gave inconsistent statements about their trip. The trooper smelled marijuana and asked for Addow’s consent in searching the car. Addow said yes, as long as he did not look in the contents of any of his bags.

The trooper then opened one of the bags and found 10-15 firearms and high-capacity pistol magazines inside.

Additional officers arrived at the scene and discovered that there was a federal arrest warrant from the United States Marshals Service for Sitladeen. Addow was arrested for carrying firearms without a permit.

In total, the complaint says the officers found 67 firearms and various pistol magazines in the car.

Officers found that the arrest warrant for Sitladeen was a provisional warrant issued by the U.S. at Canada’s request, based on a 2019 Canadian arrest warrant for first-degree homicide, fentanyl distribution, and possession of proceeds of crime. Addow also has outstanding felony arrest warrants in Canada for firearms and kidnapping; he does not have any corresponding U.S. arrest warrant.

Charges: Man Stole Unemployment Insurance Benefits While Receiving PPP Loan

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 58-year-old Lakeville man was charged via summons for one count of theft of unemployment insurance benefits on Wednesday.

According to the criminal complaint, on July 7, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension received a report from a bank that Steven Schroeder was receiving funds from a Payroll Protection Program (PPP) loan and simultaneously receiving Minnesota unemployment benefits.

Schroeder is listed as president, 100% owner, and only employee of an LLC in Lakeville, at his residence. He was working as an independent contractor for a large clothing company. He applied for a PPP loan in April of 2020, requesting a payroll loan of $8,333 a month for the program’s two and a half months, a total sum of $20,833. The loan, which he requested because of lost income due to the pandemic, was approved, and he received the full amount on May 8.

He also applied for state unemployment benefits starting on March 30, and applied again on April 15, requesting unemployment insurance from April 1 to Aug. 31. Each week of the application asks if the person will be receiving income from any source not already reported to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Every week he answered “no.”

Between May 10 and July 19, Schroeder said he worked 130 hours and earned $1,329. During those weeks, he received roughly $5,040 in net UI benefits from DEED.

However the unemployment insurance benefits from DEED say that an independent contractor cannot collect both PPP funds and UI at the same time; Schroeder did not qualify for the benefits between May 10 and July 19.

Investigators looked into his bank records, which showed that he received payment from the clothing manufacturer once a month between May and July, a sum which came out to over $16,000. He had not reported this income to DEED.

When investigators spoke to Schroeder on Sept. 30, he acknowledged that he worked as an independent contractor for the clothing manufacturer, and admitted he applied for the PPP loan to supplement his payroll, as his wages were down 50%. He also admitted to receiving unemployment benefits from DEED.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Prosecutors in Ramsey County have charged man under supervision for sexually assaulting a teenager in 1993 with sexually assaulting another woman in January.

Jesse Curry, 57, was charged Thursday with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.

According a criminal complaint, a 21-year-old woman said Curry picked her up from a bar and they did shots of vodka in his car. She woke up in his St. Paul apartment naked, didn’t remember arriving there and didn’t know where she was.

A community corrections agent who is supervising Curry discovered video on Curry’s cellphone that appears to show him sexually assaulting her. Curry told police the woman was his girlfriend but they weren’t involved sexually.

The woman said they were not in any kind of relationship and she wouldn’t have consented to sex with a man that much older than her.

Curry was sentenced to 30 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release as a repeat offender after pleading guilty in 1994 to aiding and abetting first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He was charged with sexually assaulting a 15-year-old at a party in 1993.

He also was accused of sexually assaulting a woman he met at a party in 1988, according to court documents.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Two more men and a juvenile have been charged in connection with a shooting at a Woodbury graduation party on Saturday that left 14-year-old Demaris Ekdahl dead.

Enrique Lucio Davila, 23, Jaden Lavan Townsend, 19, and a 17-year-old boy have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and four counts of aiding and abetting assault. The 17-year-old was charged by juvenile petition. Ekdahl’s stepfather, Keith Dawson, was charged in relation to the shooting on Monday.

According to complaint documents, the shooting happened on the 6100 block of Edgewood Road, where Ekdahl and four others had gone to attend the party.

When they were leaving, Davila allegedly pulled a gun on one of the people in the group and told them “don’t try anything.” The person noted that the 17-year-old also had a gun.

The group then called Dawson, who told them they needed to go back to the party so the trio would stop messing with them.

Dawson led them in his white Chevy Tahoe, and the group followed in their own car. Dawson then allegedly drove past the Davila, Townsend, and the 17-year-old, who were standing next to a black SUV, and fired his gun.

A witness said Dawson fired roughly three to four rounds, while the trio shot back 15 to 20 rounds.

Officers later found the Tahoe on Century Avenue, near the shooting. The car refused to pull over until it reached Regions Hospital. Ekdahl was in the back middle seat with significant injuries, and he was pronounced dead at 11:12 p.m.

When examining the car, officers found a bullet had traveled from the back of the car through the trunk and back seat cushion to where Ekdahl was sitting. The medical examiner said he died of a gunshot wound to his right torso, which had perforated his lung, heart and aorta.

Officers went to the 17-year-old’s house and found a bag that contained two 9mm handguns with extended 30 round magazines.

The complaint says all three are out of custody and their whereabouts are unknown.

A full examination of the guns and cars is forthcoming from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Anoka County Attorney’s Office charged Isaiah Harold-Stephaun Holmes with five felonies Wednesday evening for the death of 15-year-old Anthony Rouse.

Holmes, 17, was charged with second-degree murder, assault, and attempted robbery. The county attorney’s office is seeking to have Holmes certified to stand trial as an adult.

According to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, Rouse showed up to Mercy Hospital – Unity Campus just after 7 p.m. Sunday with a gunshot wound. According to police reports Rouse had been shot in his neck and upper shoulder area and suffered massive bleeding. He was in critical condition and later died Tuesday evening from his injuries.

Police reportedly spoke with two males who were with Rouse in the van that delivered him to Unity Hospital. They said that the three of them were driving around in one of their mother’s van earlier in the day and another wanted to buy marijuana.

The group drove to the area of 61st Avenue and Main Street in Fridley where they had previously purchased marijuana from an undisclosed man. They met up with said man and discussed their purchase, but while speaking with the man another man appeared at the passenger sliding door with a handgun and said, “Run your sh–,” which reportedly meant they were being robbed. The man told the boys not to drive off or yell, but the driver slammed on the accelerator to escape. The man then fired the gun several times. The boys noticed Rouse was bleeding and had been shot so they drove to the Hospital.

Several pieces of video evidence show Holmes at the scene of the crime and captured the shooting in its entirety.

“Violence against any person is extremely difficult for the community and law enforcement professionals to comprehend,” Sheriff James Stuart said in a release.

Holmes next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

MINNESOTA (WCCO) – A Minneapolis man has been charged with two felony-level counts for threats of violence after pointing a gun at passing cars, according to a criminal complaint.

On Aug. 3 the Oakdale Police Department says two separate callers reported a man tailgating their vehicle and pointing a firearm at them as they drove near the Mendota Heights bridge. One caller was able to report the driver’s license plate number.

The callers both described the suspect as a Black man in his mid-twenties with an average build. Police were able to identify the suspect as 32-year-old Brandon Louis Smith of Minneapolis.

Law enforcement officers located Smith at his home where he initially denied being in Mendota Heights on the day of the reported incident but later admitted to driving near the area.

Smith said the object he was pointing at the cars was not a gun but a lighter in the shape of one. Police gained permission to search Smiths’ vehicle and found that it was in fact a lighter. They also discovered an empty container for a Sig Saur P226 firearms magazine in the back seat of the vehicle.

OPD later arrested Smith on Aug. 5 for firearm and drug possession charges not related to the previous bridge incident. While searching Smith’s vehicle again they found a semi-automatic pistol, which allows Sig Saur P226 magazines to be used.

If Smith is found guilty of the felonies he could serve up to 2 Years in prison and pay a maximum fine of $6,000.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 17-year-old boy from Brooklyn Park has been charged in connection to a string of robberies and carjackings between December of 2020 and April of 2021.

He was charged in Hennepin County on Wednesday as an adult, and faces a total of nine charges including aggravated robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and assault with a dangerous weapon.

The first charges stem from an incident which took place on Dec. 4, 2020 on the 2500 block of Humboldt Avenue South in Minneapolis. The criminal complaint says that a woman had arrived home from Christmas shopping when she opened the back of her car and the suspect ran up to her while holding a handgun. He allegedly struck her in the head and she fell to the ground. Then he stole her car and fled the area, charges say.

Roughly 15 minutes later surveillance video shows the suspect pulling into a gas station in Crystal. Court documents say that gas station employees called the police when the suspect and two others used the victim’s bank cards to purchase $1,050 in gift cards.

In a second criminal complaint, the suspect allegedly robbed a high school classmate who was attempting to buy an iPhone from him. The two met on Feb. 6, 2021 and the suspect told the boy to get into his van. The boy said there was another boy in the driver’s seat of the car.

When he got into the van the suspect told him to hand over his wallet, which contained roughly $340. He complied and felt a gun pressed into his back, the complaint states.

Later, in a Miranda interview, the suspected said “we pulled up, [Victim] hopped in, we then took his money, we took his phone.” However, he claimed the gun was a BB gun.

A little over a week later, Minneapolis police were dispatched to the 3600 block of Thomas Avenue North on a report of a motor vehicle theft at gun point. The criminal complaint says that on Feb. 15, another high school classmate was giving the suspect a ride, when he asked to pick up his friend. The driver agreed and the friend sat in the back seat behind him and eventually started strangling him.

The suspect then allegedly pulled a semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the driver, pistol whipping him. Charges say that police arrested the suspect at a Cub Foods in Brooklyn Park two days later. In a Miranda interview, the suspect admitted to driving a stolen car but refused to discuss how he came into possession of the car.

Lastly, the suspect was charged for allegedly shooting a man on April 17, 2021 in Brooklyn Park.

Police responded to the scene on 6200 West Broadway Avenue and arrived to find a man who was in the area buy a firearm from a person with the Snapchat handle “Sosa.”

The man said got into the back of a Black SUV and noticed the driver and front seat passenger were both carrying Glock handguns with extended magazines. Court documents say that the man handed over $500 for a handgun and was then told to step out of the car. But when he stepped out, he was shot in the leg, allegedly by the suspect.

The suspect was arrested a little over a week later in Coon Rapids, in connection to a separate incident. He had a .40 caliber Glock handgun with him at the time.

He was ordered to stand trial as an adult by a judge on Tuesday. He is currently in custody.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 34-year-old St. Paul man faces charges for allegedly shooting and killing a man in the city’s Frogtown neighborhood last week.

Brandis Junton Wells was charged with the second-degree murder in Ramsey County on Tuesday.

Officers arrived at the scene on the 500 block of Blair Avenue around 10:15 p.m. on Dec. 28, the criminal complaint says. They found a 31-year-old man, identified as Jarrell Kirk, lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his arm and chest. Kirk was taken to Regions Hospital, but was pronounced dead.

Kirk’s father waved at officers and told them that the “shooter” was in the lower unit of the duplex. The father said that he lived with Kirk in the upper unit, and that Kirk had been in a feud with Wells, who lived below, because Kirk’s ex-girlfriend had left him for Wells.

The complaint goes on to say that the father told police that Kirk and his ex-girlfriend had gotten into a shouting match, and the people in the lower unit cut the power to the upstairs unit. Kirk went downstairs with a gun – which he had a permit to carry – and the father said he heard multiple shots.

When he came outside, he said he saw Wells shoot Kirk in the chest, court documents say. The father said the girlfriend and Wells retreated to the lower unit when the police arrived. One of the responding officers said he saw a man leave out of the back of the house before the rest of the police came to the scene.

Wells was on the run for five days, but turned himself in to St. Paul police headquarters on Monday.

In a post-Miranda interview, Wells admitted to turning the power off, and confirmed his tense relationship with Kirk. He said that he and his girlfriend decided to leave to avoid trouble, but Kirk came downstairs with a gun, threatening to kill them. Wells said he punched Kirk and fought him. When they got outside, he said Kirk was pointing his gun at him, and he intended to “beat him to the draw.”

“I thought he was going to live,” Wells said, and added he didn’t mean to kill Kirk, the complaint says.

Kirk’s death marked the 37th homicide for St. Paul, in what was a record-breaking year.

If convicted, the second-degree murder charge holds a maximum 40-year sentence.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (WCCO) – A 34-year-old St. Louis Park woman has been charged with manslaughter in connection to the death of her baby.

Ashley Bullard faces a second-degree manslaughter charge in Hennepin County.

According to court documents, police responded to a call of a baby not breathing on Jan. 20. When they arrived at an apartment on the 4700 block of Park Commons Drive, they found Bullard inside, with three young boys and an infant who was under three months old. The baby was dead when officers got there, the complaint states.

The complaint goes on to say that Bullard told police she had put her children to sleep between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. the night before, took two “benzos” and went to sleep with the baby in bed beside her. She woke up the next morning and noticed his face was covered, and called the police when he didn’t move. She said she didn’t use any other substances that night.

Police found a rock of suspected methamphetamine and pipe in the master bathroom, the complaint says. During a blood draw, officers learned that there was amphetamine, methamphetamine, clonazepam, and alprazolam in Bullard’s system.

Documents say her son told a social worker that Bullard had been out with friends the night before. When he went to wake his mother up, he found the baby face down on a pillow in her bed.

A medical examiner found the infant’s cause of death to be positional asphyxiation.
